COUGAR C Volume 28 Issue 10 March 26, 1999 Mr. And Ms. Cougar Results Jon Welbom and Carrie Rogers were recently elected as Mr. and Ms. Cougar for the 1998-99 school year. The elections were held on Feb. 16 and 17 in the Student Center Lobby. Each active club and sports team had the opportunity to nominate one candidate for each position. The qualifications required of nominees were: *Must be a full time student; ♦Must have been enrolled at WCC during the Fall 1998; *Must have a minimum of 3.0 g.p.a.; and *Must be an active member of the organization by which he or she was nominated. Welborn is a freshman at WCC and has been involved with both the Student Government Association and the baseball team during this academic year. He is also a member of Phi Theta Kappa (academic honor society) and he is enrolled in the Associate in Arts program. After he completes his degree at WCC, he plans to transfer to Appalachian State University to pursue a degree in criminal justice. Jon is a member of Temple Hill Methodist Church and is the son of Perry and Patricia Welborn. Rogers is a enrolled in the Business Administration program at WCC and is active in several organizations. She is cur rently serving as the editor-in-chief of the student newspaper and is a member of the Rotaract Club, Student Ambassadors, SGA, and Phi Theta Kappa. In addition to her activities at WCC, Carrie also works part time as a deli employee at Lowes Foods on Highway 18. After completing her degree at WCC, Carrie plans to enroll at Gardner Webb to complete a (Continued on page 2) New Faces at Wilkes Community College Wilkes Community College recently announced the employ ment of fourteen new full-time employees. They are as fol lows: Nick Blackburn has accepted the position of network admin istrator. Prior to working at WCC, Nick has been self- employed as owner of Computer Resource, a computer con sulting business. He brings with him experience in the field of computer operating systems and hardware platforms. Nick Blackburn lives in Roaring River. June Weaver is the college’s new secretary for the JTPA pro gram at Ashe and Alleghany campuses. Prior to her employ ment at WCC, she worked for Gates Rubber Company in Jef ferson. Ms. Weaver is a graduate of Watauga High School and is presently studying at WCC to earn an Associate degree in Human Services. She and her husband , Joel, live in Jeffer son. Sean Juengling comes to Wilkes from Henderson, filling the position of lead instructor/coordinator of Hospitality Serv ices. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Hospital ity Management from Ohio State University and has worked in the restaurant management area since completing his de gree in 1994. Prior to coming to WCC, he was employed by Carolina Quality/Burger King as an assistant restaurant man ager. He and his wife, Christie, live in Wilkesboro. David Greenwood is the new full-time computer writing cen ter coordinator/ instructor for WCC. Prior to accepting the position, he had worked part-time in this position since August 1997. Greenwood received his Bachelor of Arts de gree in English fi-om Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. He lives in the Millers Creek community. Randy Gambill is WCC’s new computer laboratory assistant. Gambill has been working at Wilkes part-time since August 1997. A graduate of Ashe Central High School, he received his Associate degree in Horticulture from North Carolina State University in Raleigh. He is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, where he trained as an electrician/alarms systems tech nician. He and his wife, Angela, have ten-year old twin chil dren, Zeb and Beulah, and live in Wilkesboro. Charro Gruver is WCC’s new lead instructor in the physics area. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, with (Continued on page 2)
